Trump says that Iran is moving towards giving up its entire nuclear weapons programme. This is not a matter of a pause of 20 years, but of a complete dismantling of the entire programme. This is what Israel in particular has set as a non-negotiable demand all along. Iran has thus far promised to annihilate Israel.
Trump said this to the press on the lawn outside the White House on Thursday. There is still no finalised agreement, but it is very close. It may be that Trump said this in order to put pressure on Iran. He may have sought to bind them to the mast.
President Donald Trump said বৃহস্পতিবার that Iran has “totally agreed” to give up its nuclear ambitions, declaring that a deal is “very close”, while suggesting that the current ceasefire may not need to be extended, and saying that he “would travel” to Pakistan to finalise an agreement if it is completed in negotiation.
Speaking outside the White House, Trump said that Tehran has now agreed to abide by Washington’s red line that the country must never acquire nuclear weapons, following several weeks of sustained military pressure and a sweeping American blockade.
Should this come to pass – that no further war is required, that Iran yields – it will be a great victory for Trump and the United States, and a defeat not only for the clerical regime, but also for the Democrats and the media who oppose Trump and want the United States to fail.
Trump sets the bar higher; this is not a matter of any temporary prohibition on the nuclear weapons plans, but of a complete cancellation.
“We had to make sure that Iran never gets a nuclear weapon,” Trump said, adding: “They have agreed to that, totally. They have agreed to almost everything.”
He said that Iran’s present position reflects a shift from the period before the American-Israeli campaign, when Tehran had opposed those terms.
“They are willing to do things today that they were not willing to do two months ago,” Trump said.
Trump also rejected proposals for time-limited restrictions on Iran’s nuclear weapons programme, making it clear that the agreement under discussion is not structured as a temporary halt.
Such an outcome will also be a victory over European allies who have not wished to contribute to stopping Iran. European allies have pretended that negotiations were still an option, even after Iran demonstrated that it has missiles capable of reaching Oslo and London.
A major question is what is to happen to the 440 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 per cent. There has been talk that ground forces would have to enter in order to remove it. Trump now says that Iran is willing to surrender it voluntarily. That would entail a total victory for Trump and Netanyahu.
“There is no 20-year limit,” Trump said, explaining that what the United States has obtained is “a very powerful statement” that Iran will not have nuclear weapons, not even “beyond 20 years”.
Trump further claimed that Iran has agreed to hand over its stockpile of enriched uranium, referring to material that was buried following American strikes on the country’s nuclear facilities.
“They have agreed to deliver the nuclear dust to us,” Trump said. “It lies deep underground, because of the attack we carried out.”
“We have many agreements with Iran,” he added. “I think something very positive is going to happen.”
Trump says that the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is working. Iranian ships are not being allowed out. It is paralysing Iran’s economy. The United States recently concluded an agreement with Indonesia regarding the use of its airspace. Iran carries out the transshipment of oil cargoes in Indonesian waters. The United States is also putting pressure on banks so that they do not trade with Iran. The combination of all these measures is intended to demonstrate to Iran that it has no chance. It has a running noose around its neck, and the United States can tighten it as required.
The regime has the choice between capitulating or being overthrown. That is a choice between plague and cholera.
Trump says that he is willing to travel to Pakistan if the agreement is in place. The negotiations resume next week, and Trump does not think an extension of the ceasefire will be necessary. Should there be no agreement, Trump is ready to resume the war.
“I would travel to Pakistan,” Trump said. “If a deal is concluded in Islamabad, I may go. They want me there.”
The ceasefire between the parties, which entered into force last Tuesday, expires next week, but Trump suggested that it may not need to be extended.“I’m not sure it needs to be extended,” he said. “Iran wants to make a deal, and we have a very good relationship with them.”
At the same time, Trump made it clear that the outcome depends on the agreement being completed in negotiation.
“I could make a small deal, but I do not want that,” Trump said. “I want to get the whole thing done.”
He warned that if the negotiations collapse and there is no agreement, the fighting will resume.
