Trump says the war is over. The agreement is in place, and the market believes him. The order to lift the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has been given, and oil will begin to flow freely. Trump’s announcement came on his own 80th birthday.
“The deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now done,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. “Congratulations to everyone! I hereby authorise free passage through the Strait of Hormuz, and at the same time authorise the immediate lifting of the U.S. naval blockade. Ships of the world: Start your engines. Let the oil flow!”
The Prime Minister of Pakistan confirmed that Iran has agreed. What we have not yet been informed of, however, are the details. Trump has been crystal clear about his demands, and anything that deviates from them will be interpreted as weakness and a victory for Iran.
“After intensive negotiations, we are pleased to announce that a PEACE AGREEMENT has been reached between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Sharif said.
“Both parties have declared that they will immediately and permanently cease military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon.”
“The official signing ceremony will take place on Friday, 19 June, in Switzerland,” Sharif added.
NRK’s Yama Wolasmal says that Iran and the United States have two very different versions of the peace agreement. Wolasmal does not even speak of a peace agreement, but rather of a 60-day ceasefire. He says that “everyone” he speaks to in the Middle East maintains that it is Iran that has won the war. Oil will soon begin flowing again, and enormous sums will pour into the regime. After 60 days, negotiations on the nuclear programme are to begin.
If this should prove to be the outcome, it would represent a grandiose defeat for Trump. In that case, Obama will have been proven right.
