Muslims have received the green light to build a grand mosque in Ski in Nordre Follo. Muslimsk Kultursenter Ski has around 1,000 members, and they paid 10 million kroner for the plot, while the building itself will cost around 60 million. It will be a mosque capable of accommodating 700 people, with prayer rooms for men and women, a Qur’an school, a café, and a minaret up to 15 metres high. The latter is commonly used for the call to prayer.
The municipality says yes
Pakistanis in Nordre Follo established a mosque many years ago, in rented premises. Muslimsk Kultursenter Ski is said to have had larger plans than that for a long time. Among other things, they are said to have attempted to convert other buildings for the purpose, but then purchased a plot in order to build anew from the ground up. Now all municipal permits are said to be in order, and the mosque builders shared the news on Facebook on 25 May:
Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh It is with great joy and gratitude that we wish to share important and joyful news with you. On 20 May 2026, Nordre Follo municipality granted a framework permit for the construction of a new mosque and cultural centre at Glynitveien 32 at Drømtorp in Ski. The framework permit means that the municipality has approved the overarching plans for the project. With this decision, MKS (Muslimsk Kultursenter Ski) has now reached a significant milestone on the path towards the realisation of our vision of building a new mosque and cultural centre for Muslims in Nordre Follo.
They also write that the obtaining of quotations from various contractors is under way, and that larger fundraising drives are being planned, in addition to the fundraising they have already conducted. Islamic religious organisations based on membership are subsidised by both the state and the municipality, on equal terms with the Church of Norway, but all the mosque-building taking place throughout Norway and the Nordic countries is heavily based on collected funds. Often both domestically and abroad, that is to say in the Islamic world. Something that allegedly is to secure the contributors a better place in paradise. And more Islam in the West.
Collecting millions
The mosque builders in Ski have already been engaged in fundraising for some time. Among other things, they held what they called a “Grand dinner” in February 2024, where they wrote, among other things:
“Several mosques in Oslo and the surrounding area were represented by their respective imams, and a shared thought among them was that MKS is building Allah SWT’s home, and not merely a building. The keynote guest, Professor Dr Allama Shahbaz Ahmad Chishti from the USA, delivered a lecture that contributed to great engagement among those present concerning both the building project and the collection of support. The message was further strengthened by the highly knowledgeable local imams who were present through appeals. Everyone was highly positive towards MKS’s concept, with strong agreement concerning the realisation of the building project estimated at 60 million kroner. This is an amount that, with faith in Allah SWT, we shall be able to collect.”

Mosque building is popular among the imams
In addition to appeals to donate, they mentioned some of the prominent guests:
Imam Mohamed Amir Khan (imam MKS), mosques represented on stage: – Drammen Mosque – Jamia Baab Ul Ilm – ICC – Al Marifah Trosterud – Furuset Mosque – CJAS – WIM – Bazm e naqshband – SNMS – WIM Holmlia – Ghosia Masjid.
Media coverage: – NorPak Media – Inam Ul-Haq – Dunya News Norway.
Naat khawan: – Sahibzaada Yaseen Saeed – Allama Najeeb Ur Rehman Naz.
Of the latter two, Yaseen Saeed is one who is accustomed to singing that Allah is greatest in various contexts, such as when Oslo Høyre invites people to an Islamic celebration in Oslo City Hall, while Allama Najeeb Ur Rehman Naz must be the Pakistani whom the Norwegian Armed Forces in 2017 employed as a field imam.
Warning against plants that displace local species
The zoning plan for the mosque building that is said to have been approved discusses the project in rather sober terms. “Purpose ‘Public or private service provision’ with the following sub-purpose: Assembly premises for religious practice, culture, education and administration.” Thereafter they address matters such as car parking, bicycle parking, surface water, noise, warnings against using vegetation that constitutes an ecological risk to native species. Plus the requirement that the mosque’s aesthetics as a building must “strive for an architectural expression for the new development that takes into account surrounding buildings, terrain and landscape”.
The minaret is also discussed soberly:
“Regulatory area for tower Within the regulatory boundary, the construction of 1 tower with a maximum height of 15 m is permitted. The height of the tower is calculated from the average finished levelled terrain up to the structure. The area for the structure is permitted with a maximum footprint within a circle with a diameter of 4 m. The area for the structures is included in the built-up area calculation.”
The urban area of Ski in Akershus has 22,700 inhabitants (2025). According to the mosque’s map, the new mosque is located in a business park, midway between two upper secondary schools.
Mosques are being built everywhere, Rabita and Islam Net are merely two of countless current developers. Does anyone have a complete overview?
