While Republicans in states such as Texas are busy stemming Islamic influence, Democrats in California are doing the opposite: They are voting to make Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha official public holidays. The curriculum is also to be revised so that Islamic holidays can be incorporated.
California lawmakers are advancing a new bill that would establish two Muslim holidays as state holidays, while also giving the state authority to develop a new curriculum model so that pupils can “recognise and celebrate” these religious holidays in the classroom.
The bill, AB 2017, was passed in the state assembly with 64 votes to 1 and was sent on Wednesday to the Senate Appropriations Committee. The bill, sponsored by Assemblyman Matt Haney (D-San Francisco), designates Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha – two major holidays celebrated by Muslims worldwide – as official state holidays, and gives local school boards and community colleges the option to close their campuses on both holidays.
Both holidays are traditionally celebrated over three to four days, but the bill designates one single day for each in the state calendar.
Officially, according to the law, no proselytising is to take place in schools. Many municipalities have thrown Christianity out of the schools along with its holidays. Now Islam is coming in with fanfare.
However, the official review by the Senate Education Committee in its analysis of the bill stated: “While California’s constitution prohibits public schools from teaching sectarian or denominational doctrines, it does not prohibit teaching about religion.”
The committee found that AB 2017 complies with the state’s existing education law, which permits teaching about religious literature, dance, music and art provided it is connected to the curriculum and not intended to promote a religion. It concluded that the bill “does not authorise religious indoctrination”.
If the bill is passed, Eid will be included in an ever-growing list of cultural and religious days that the state recognises as holidays and which give the right to close schools throughout the district. AB 2017 is modelled on AB 268, which came into force in January 2026, and which established Diwali as an official state holiday, gave the right to optional school closures in school districts and allowed the state board to adopt a model for curriculum guidance to celebrate the holiday.
Supporters of AB 2017, such as the Muslim advocacy organisation CAIR California, claim that the bill is intended to combat inequality in schools and workplaces.
“Despite existing legislation in California, Muslim students and employees still experience repeated inequality. Taking a day off often means missing important instruction or falling behind on work assignments,” said Oussama Mokeddem, Director of Legislative and Government Affairs at CAIR-CA, to Fox News Digital. “AB 2017 removes the burden of having to choose between one’s faith and academic or professional success by offering a formal framework, such as negotiated agreements or collaborative agreements, so that schools and state workplaces can recognise Eid as a very important holiday.”
The elevation of Islam in schools too is in line with the Islamo-socialist culture that prevails in the Democratic Party.
