There are probably very few people who spend time on Canada’s recent history, but it is actually quite instructive.

As the Canadian-born – now US-based – communications expert and political commentator Emma-Jo Morris explained a couple of days ago on The Alex Marlow Show, Canada’s political transformation has proceeded unusually rapidly. Even during Morris’s childhood, in the years around 2007, Canada appeared to be a country without major political problems – a peaceful and harmonious place where people could concentrate on their personal problems, which politicians cannot solve.

But what happens when there are no political problems to solve? Then politicians find themselves in difficulty, because they make their living by claiming that they solve problems. The answer in Canada is the same as in the European countries: If there are no problems, politicians create them themselves – while at the same time promising voters that they will solve them.

Canada’s creation of problems consists mainly of the mass importation of foreigners who do not necessarily want anything to do with the old Canadian culture. Today, one-third of Canada’s inhabitants were born outside the country.

But that is how it is supposed to be, because, as Emma-Jo Morris points out, according to the politicians Canada has no essence, no inner core, and therefore nothing around which to unite. In a short space of time, Canada has become a place where all cultures, clans, castes and adherents of political ideologies can freely take their place – with the internal dissolution that such an upheaval always entails.

In several Western countries that have undergone the same development as Canada, until recently there was talk of the need for the «integration» of the many immigrants. For the most part, people have stopped talking about that – because there is nothing into which to integrate. As has become apparent, integration cannot be imposed by the state; it is something that each individual immigrant must decide for himself. But even if foreigners from distant regions should wish to become integrated, the question in Canada and the other Western countries becomes: into what?

When foreigners arrive in a Western country that professes to be multicultural, they must necessarily conclude that they are as integrated as all the country’s other inhabitants, because there is no national culture of which to become a part. And anyone who claims that there is a nation is branded by politicians, experts and the media as a racist or a supporter of Hitler. So who dares to say that Canada is Canadian, Denmark Danish, Germany German, and so on?

But as Emma-Jo Morris observes, even a dissolved society needs something around which to unite, and if that cannot be national sentiment, it becomes hatred of others. In Canada, it has become anti-Americanism, more specifically hatred of Trump. The same applies in Europe. If we cannot hold together around something, we can at least hate together.

In this context, Morris could have referred to the German jurist and constitutional theorist Carl Schmitt, who attracted attention in 1932 with the book «Der Begriff des Politischen» (The Concept of the Political), which was to become highly influential in the Nazi Party, which Schmitt joined the following year. Schmitt’s thesis was that politics is about distinguishing between friends and enemies. According to him, it is about ensuring the survival of one’s own group.

Carl Schmitt himself had no difficulty identifying his enemy and his friend. In August 1934, he published a defence of Hitler’s killing of several hundred party comrades and national conservatives during the «Night of the Long Knives», entitled «Der Führer schützt das Recht» (The Führer Protects the Law).

And if there is no longer any national culture, and one refuses to acknowledge any continuity between the generations, but instead claims that everything is new, it must necessarily end in catastrophe.

For the time being, the West is being held together by anti-Americanism and hatred of Trump. Whom will the multiculturalists order us to hate when Trump has left office? And when none of the problems with which they have burdened us has been solved?
