«Citizen Vigilante» is an action thriller film from 2026 that is produced, written and directed by the German filmmaker Uwe Boll. After the film was completely banned in Germany and Elon Musk decided to put it out on X for free viewing for 48 hours, interest exploded – as forbidden films and books always have done. This is the dumbest thing authorities can do, and it guarantees sales. Now the film is going viral everywhere, and is being watched by millions daily, to the great delight of some, and to frothing moral rage from others.
I have seen it, and since I soon have five decades behind me in the cinema seat in front of action films, I know a thing or two about the genre. In addition, I will (as always) rise above the fuzz and uproar and view the film from a sober and as objective a viewpoint as possible.
So what is «Citizen Vigilante» actually about? One must actually divide it into many layers, for this is not just a film. It is a political statement. Even though Musk has removed his posting, there are many more who post it, and you can stream the film here, because the authorities have lost control over what people are told. Fortunately.
The Plot
The film is about the main character Michael Sanders (played by Armie Hammer), who is a former American elite soldier who has inherited his father’s property company. He is visiting a nameless European city to inspect the properties and operations. He is also the secretive “Citizen Vigilante” that “everyone” is talking about on social media, and whom the Interpol chief Henry is searching for with large resources.
«Citizen Vigilante» is namely hunting violent immigrants, because he believes that the state and authorities have imported crime and failed their own citizens because of an all too soft justice system and penal system, which benefits and gives special treatment to criminal immigrants. Therefore Sanders commits targeted attacks on migrants, criminals, gangs, rapists, police officers and corrupt local statesmen, through pure and ruthless self-justice.
This creates panic in the elite and among the authorities, because he becomes a viral hero figure who sorts things out where the authorities fail. He visits victims and asks if they want “justice”, and dispenses both judgment and punishment with absolute, ice-cold ruthlessness and extreme use of violence. Just so it is said: Michael Sanders is not a nice guy – and Armie Hammer does an excellent job of conjuring up a man who is more machine than human. I have hardly seen the like since Anton Chigurh.
The Quality
Is it a good and watchable action film? Yes absolutely, because Armie Hammer holds the whole film together, despite a somewhat wobbly and jumping script, a low budget, varying pace and rapid production. But also because the film is so raw and unrestrained that the “special effects” experts have had to dig into the entire range for splatter. It is not as elegant as Tarantino, but it is a good attempt.
It is also a good and watchable action film because one does not sit untouched, and at times becomes a bit queasy. But above all because it awakens such violent engagement in society, since it is so “dangerous” that it is immediately censored by the authorities. And films that get so much attention, one should see regardless, whether one likes it or not.
I myself would have wished for something tighter direction, fewer filler scenes, higher quality and perhaps even a half hour longer film, that went even deeper into the conflicts and characters. But oh well. It is as it is, and we take what we get. It is well delivered by an indie producer who will never win a single prize for his work. And I hope to see more of the reviled and frozen out Armie Hammer as a villain.
The Controversy
There is a growing feeling among ethnic Europeans that after forty years of mass immigration, Islamisation and the social experiment “multiculture”, the experiment has failed, and the results are devastating. But instead of putting on the brakes and discussing this in a sober and decent way, Western globalists have chosen to do the exact opposite:
They stick their middle finger in the eye of their own citizens, increase mass immigration, the special treatment and differential treatment of citizens and immigrants, and rather protect criminals and anti-democratic elements who have nothing to do in Europe, and who have nothing positive to contribute to our Western societies. Western citizens feel increasingly betrayed.
It is not that the left, globalists and the EU elite do not recognise themselves in this picture of reality or protest against it. The problem is that they go completely, frothing berserk, and they shy away from no means to shame, stop, arrest, scare and character assassinate anyone who shows understanding for such a view. It is those who react to forty years of divisive policy who are declared as the dividers, for socialists always blame everyone else.
In the minds of national democratic citizens, therefore, the elite, the left, the globalists, the EU nobility, the woke activists and the Islamists now constitute a massive and dangerous power structure that is in the process of undermining and destroying their own nations on behalf of foreign powers. And it does not matter whether this is a real perception or just “conspiracy theories”. The perception is spreading, full stop. And one cannot stop such a perception by giving people the finger. That only works against its purpose. It is the sort of thing that ultimately triggers revolution.
The Politics
It is therefore this film that is so dangerous. The authorities in Europe do not seem the least bit worried about the rapidly increasing immigrant crime, sex crimes, welfare fraud, corruption and foreign-cultural violence and counter-culture – which has been invited to Europe to “enrich” our Western societies. They are panic-stricken afraid that the reaction to this bad policy will organise itself and give a recoil that really creates social uprising and revolution. That will namely hit the elite itself, and that is the only thing they really care about.
There have been a host of films about vigilantes, self-justice and rebellion against the authorities over the years. One of the first, which created the same controversy, was Charles Bronson’s “Death Wish” from 1974. Also the prize-winning Martin Scorsese film “Taxi Driver” from 1976 created a lot of controversy, not least because of 12-year-old Jodie Foster, who played a child prostitute. She also played the lead role in the film “The Brave One”, while Denzel Washington has played in films like “Man on Fire”, and “The Equalizer”. Everyone loves and praises these films where the good fights against the evil. But “Citizen Vigilante” stands out in a crucial way.
The Societal Danger:
It speaks directly to the audience, and encourages them to do the same. Rebel. Do something about the frustration, powerlessness and injustice. Take to the streets and defend themselves. Commit revolution by all means – and that, dear readers, is “a bridge too far”. For me too.
In Western democracies it is actually not permitted to encourage breaking the state’s monopoly on violence and committing violence, self-justice and taking over the streets – even though the immigrants’ primitive clan culture and antifa thugs do exactly that, time and again nearly unpunished. We anti-globalists hate both them, the Islamists, violence, self-justice, reverse apartheid laws and attacks on freedom of speech. It is uncivilised. But so is the immigration policy.
If the majority of ethnically Western citizens start nodding approvingly to such encouragements, and start protecting vigilante activity, the authorities face an insoluble problem. And it no longer helps to roar “right-wing extremist”, for if such a wave breaks loose in England or Germany, it will be bloody. Very, very bloody – and nothing will be able to stop it. And ethnic Europeans are still many, many more than the immigrants and their friends in higher circles. Both of the latter groups are helpless against such a revolution. That vigilantes have not arisen and the revolution has not broken out shows only Western-cultural citizens’ self-restraint and composure.
It is precisely such a breakdown that we immigration-critical people have warned against for forty years. It is precisely therefore we have asked that the project “multiculture” and globalism must be stopped. To avoid uprising and violence. It is therefore we have tolerated being called right-wing extremists and “Nazis” by the left’s empty-headed upbringing-less thugs: because someone must warn against bad policy that in the end will create a terrible counter-reaction. And why? The answer you find in the article “Dream from Disneyland” from 2010, which concludes like this:
– For we do not believe in multiculture. We believe it is a dream from Disneyland. Rootlessness put into system. Long-term idiocy, and we believe it may come to tear our country to pieces.
It is precisely this that is happening throughout Europe. It is twenty years since this literary warning, and everyone still wants to shoot the warners instead of listening. Globalists will never listen to warnings and risk assessments. They only want to be right – like defiant little shits. And therefore they themselves have created the basis for the film “Citizen Vigilante” and everything it might bring about.
Because action gives reaction.
Key Facts about Production and Cast
Main role holder: Armie Hammer plays Michael Sanders and it is his first large leading role after a multi-year exile in the industry due to accusations of sexual abuse in 2021 (for which no criminal case was ultimately brought).
Supporting roles: Costas Mandylor plays Henry, an Interpol chief who has the task of hunting the main character.
Inspiration from real life: Director Uwe Boll stated that the script was loosely inspired by a real criminal case from 2016 in Hamburg, Germany, where a group of teenagers received suspended sentences for a gang assault.
Original title: Boll had originally intended to give the film the title «The Dark Knight», but was legally blocked by DC Comics/Warner Bros., which forced the generic name change.
A twisted motivation: In contrast to typical films about citizen defence that are exclusively driven by family revenge, Sanders is also motivated by a desire to protect his family business, as local crime bosses cause his network of 3500 inherited properties to plummet in value.
Country Ban and Direct Censorship
The German ban: The film was completely banned in Germany. The German age rating authorities refused to give the film any classification certificate, and argued that the film effectively encouraged violence against immigrants. Uwe Boll’s response: Boll strongly condemned the age rating authorities’ decision and called it obvious political censorship. Because of the ban, the film can only be bought legally physically in Germany if it is imported from neighbouring Switzerland or Austria.
The free stunt on X (Twitter), Elon Musk’s involvement: After the European cinema blocks, the technology billionaire Elon Musk actively promoted the film on his platform, X.
48-hour release: At the end of June 2026, Uwe Boll and Elon Musk uploaded the entire film to X completely free in a limited window of 48 hours. The streaming quickly gathered millions of views and massive engagement before it was taken down, as planned.
Further details: The production of «Citizen Vigilante» was a remarkably quick turnaround. Principal photography only started in Croatia on 27 January 2025, which means the film went from first shooting day to cinema release in under 17 months.
In addition, despite the hyper-political nature of the final version, Armie Hammer admitted in interviews that he did not sign on to the project out of political alliance, but rather out of a desperate desire to work again after having been completely blacklisted by Hollywood for five years in a row.
