In his closing speech ahead of the mid-term elections, President Donald Trump said that the US is facing a fateful election. On Tuesday, Americans will go to the polls.
Trump chose to deliver his final speech in front of the Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C., and spoke at length about the reconstruction work his administration has carried out.
He then turned his attention to Tuesday’s mid-term elections.
“These are the most dangerous candidates ever to stand for election. There has never been anything like what we are seeing now: jihadists and members of the Muslim Brotherhood,” said Trump, who accused Abdul El-Sayed (D), a Senate candidate in Michigan, of being a member of the Islamist group.
The Muslim Brotherhood is not completely banned as a single organisation throughout the US, but certain branches and sub-organisations have been classified and sanctioned as terrorist organisations by the US authorities.
Trump added that the Democratic candidates “are all committed to the same radical agenda: open borders, raising your taxes by trillions of dollars, taking away your guns, gender-affirming interventions on your children, to phase out oil and natural gas, to send energy costs soaring, and to open the floodgates to millions of migrants from all over the world, in the hope of getting them to vote”, according to The Guardian.
In recent weeks, Trump has travelled back and forth across the country to attend campaign rallies on behalf of several Republicans facing a tough election.
“Americans are ready. They’re ready to vote. I hope they’re ready to do the right thing,” said Trump.
On the implications of the ongoing war with Iran, Trump made a final appeal to voters.
“I don’t even know if you can call it a war, because we haven’t fought for months. Oil prices are now plummeting. They’re plummeting to record lows. No one has ever seen such a fall, and they’ll keep falling. I hope people realise this when they go into the polling booth, because we had to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.”
The price per gallon of petrol and diesel remains at $4.10/$6.20, which most Americans will consider too high.
As things stand, the Democrats are set to take a majority in the House of Representatives, whilst the battle for control of the Senate is expected to be far closer.
In addition to Michigan, attention is turning to the states of Texas, Iowa and Kansas, where, according to opinion polls, the Democrats are within striking distance of winning enough seats to take a majority in the Senate as well.
It will be an exciting election tomorrow, 3 November – unless, that is, you are one of those ‘US experts’ who are regular fixtures in the Norwegian media. For they are in no doubt: Trump has already lost.
One of these ‘experts’ is Eirik Løkke, who tells VG that he believes Trump is helping to ruin the Republicans’ chances in the mid-term elections.
– He just spouts one piece of nonsense after another. Voters have previously accepted this because they thought he was a clever businessman. But that no longer works. Now all you hear is the nonsense. What he’s doing is ruining the election for the Republicans,” says Løkke.
– The best thing he could have done was to stay out of it. Not even billions of dollars can save him and the party. They’re going to take a massive hit.
In a couple of days we’ll have the final result, unless the Democrats manage once again to drag the election out for weeks.
