During this week’s intense Senate hearing in Washington, Anthony Fauci, the former chief adviser on pandemic response, was grilled over his COVID-19 policies. A well-known body language expert now claims that Fauci’s non-verbal communication displayed clear “signals of deception”.
Dr Lillian Glass is a recognised expert on body language. She analysed Fauci’s appearance for the New York Post and describes a marked change in his demeanour as the questioning became more intense:
- He flushed and then turned pale
- His breathing changed
- He hunched over
- He shifted in his chair
- He blinked frequently
- He licked his lips
– The reactions are typically associated with stress, discomfort or attempts to conceal something
Glass believes these reactions are typical when the autonomic nervous system takes over – which is generally associated with stress, discomfort or attempts to conceal something. She also observed that Fauci, during the course of the hearing, went from a confident, almost arrogant demeanour to appearing “guarded” and “weak”.
The hearing before the Senate Homeland Security Committee concerned, among other things, the funding of gain-of-function research, the handling of the pandemic, communication about vaccines and lockdowns, and cooperation with social media on censorship.

Fauci has previously been highly reserved during similar hearings. In some instances, he has refused to answer questions, citing his “rights”.
Body language analysis is not the same as legal evidence. Experts in the field point out that stress in a high-risk situation can produce similar reactions without necessarily meaning that a person is lying. Nevertheless, the analysis has attracted considerable attention because it feeds directly into the now long-running debate over Fauci’s credibility in relation to the handling of the pandemic.
