Two American soldiers have been killed by Iran in Jordan. Trump has promised that such attacks will be met with overwhelming force. The regime in Iran has threatened to kill Trump and has made those threats part of the urban landscape.
US Central Command, which is responsible for American military operations in the Middle East, announced on Saturday that the soldiers were killed while defending themselves against Iranian ballistic missiles and drone attacks. The US military stated that one soldier remains missing, while a further four American soldiers were treated in Jordanian hospitals and later discharged. The deaths come amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, where the regional conflict has intensified following the collapse of the ceasefire.
This is the same rhetoric that prevailed during the hostage-taking of 44 American citizens at the US Embassy in Tehran in 1979.
The new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, says that Trump’s signature is worthless.
He accuses the American president of breaching the agreement.
The question is whether Mojtaba is even alive. He has not appeared in public since the attack on 28 February, when his family was virtually wiped out.
