English immigration authorities and the Independent Monitoring Boards (IMB) are warning staff at asylum accommodation centres – in order to maintain “professional standards” – against wearing the English flag bearing St George’s Cross on their uniforms during the FIFA World Cup.
The warning was issued after staff were observed wearing the English flag on their uniforms during the summer of 2025 in connection with the success of England’s women’s football team at the European Championship. The IMB believes that patriotic, national symbols, viewed in light of the public debate on immigration, may offend certain groups who have entered the country illegally.
The notion that English people in England should be instructed to feel ashamed of national symbols and pride in their own country on English soil is described as absurd and as yet another example of an “establishment” completely disconnected from the people it is supposed to represent.
