Joachim Trier’s «Sentimental Value» won the Oscar for Best International Feature Film. It is the first time a Norwegian feature film has won an Oscar. «Sentimental Value» was nominated in no fewer than nine categories, but “only” won this one — Best International. It is a prize that ranks highly.
But Hollywood is not what it was. The film community has gone to war against Donald Trump’s policies. The prize for Best Picture went to Paul Thomas Anderson’s «One Battle After Another», which depicts an uprising against the federal authorities’ deportation programme for illegals. Trump won the election on the promise that the approximately 15 million whom Biden admitted shall be returned to their countries of origin. They overwhelmed the housing market, the health-care system and the schools, but wealthy Hollywood stars do not notice that. They can assume the role of the protector of the weak. It is this role the film addresses.
Therefore Hollywood is no longer what it was.
For Norwegian film it is a dream fulfilled. Norwegian film has acquired points of contact with international trends and distinguishes itself with a nordic touch. It is a style we shall probably see more of.
For Trier it was a personal victory that the team he has worked with for many years came so far.
– Eskil and I have worked together since we were in our early 20s, for almost 30 years now. So it means a great deal that I and the gang — the team I have worked with all the way — receive this recognition, said Trier.
