Poland is sending 5,000 soldiers to the border to temporarily assist with checks along the border with Germany and Lithuania.

A dispute has been building up between Poland and Germany on the border for some time. Polish politicians accuse German authorities of transporting migrants to the Polish border and pushing them across – with the tacit help of Polish border guards.

From next Monday, Poland will introduce border controls with Germany and Lithuania to stop migrants, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Tuesday.

Now Poland is also sending soldiers towards the borders with Lithuania and Germany, reports NTB-DPA.

When Friedrich Merz took over as Federal Chancellor of Germany earlier this year, far stricter border controls were announced. Poland’s decision to send soldiers to the border is a response to this.

Some Polish soldiers will help with border checks, while others will assist with management, logistics, training and general security assistance.

On the border with Belarus, the Polish military has been assisting with border control for years. There are high fences and surveillance to make it more difficult for migrants to enter the EU.

The stricter border controls on the border with Germany will cause delays and longer queues between the countries, Polish authorities have previously said.

Germany introduced border controls with Poland back in October 2023. Warsaw has since accused Berlin of sending irregular migrants arriving in the country from Poland back across the border.

In other words, the wave of migration is causing strife between EU member states.
