California’s newly elected governor, Xavier Becerra (D), launched a direct attack on ICE and suggested that he is ready to reinstate Joe Biden’s open-borders policy.
Immigrants from all corners of the world deserve the American dream and should not be deported, the new governor of California emphasised in his first speech following his election victory, writes Breitbart News.
Becerra, who served as US Secretary of Health and Human Services under President Biden, referred to agents from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency as ‘mercenaries’ and claimed that ‘the American Dream’ cannot be ‘deported’.
“The California dream is universal. It’s non-negotiable. And yes, it is undeportable,” he exclaimed to cheers from his supporters.
“There’s a new sheriff in town,” the gov.-elect continued, “and he’s got a law degree and a union card. [cheering] If anyone wants to come after California or any one Californian, they better be ready for a fight.
Becerra thus also included undocumented immigrants in the definition of “Californians”.
The newly elected governor also presented a number of dubious ‘rights’, and in that context referred to ICE as a gang of ‘mercenaries’.
“Never in our lifetimes has so much of what we love been on the line, our families, our safety, our freedom,” he exclaimed about the current political climate.
“Freedom to love, freedom to learn, freedom to unionize and earn a living wage, the right to see a doctor, and the freedom to make your own decisions about your body.
“Freedom to breathe clean air, drink clean water, travel unpolluted coastlines. Freedom to walk the streets without fear of gun violence or ICE mercenaries. And freedom tonight to hold a free election.”
Becerra’s speech was likely well received by many voters, as California has the highest proportion of immigrants in the US.
California has 10.9 million immigrants – 22 per cent of the foreign-born population across the entire country. In 2024, 28 per cent of California’s population was foreign-born, more than twice the proportion in the rest of the country (13 per cent). Almost half (44 per cent) of children in California have at least one parent who is an immigrant.
The state formerly known as The Golden State has, in recent years, sunk ever deeper into an economic crisis, and is also struggling with high numbers of homeless people and a rising rate of serious crime.
The ultra-rich are fleeing the state due to sky-high tax rates, leaving ordinary working people to foot the entire bill.
