While US President Donald Trump talks about “fake news”, Senator Chris Murphy (D) is concerned with what he calls “fake problems” when it comes to immigrants and crime.
Murphy, who represents Connecticut in the Senate, made the remarks to a friendly audience in his home state on 26 August, writes Breitbart News.
– Nobody likes to hear this, but immigrants – first-generation immigrants – and undocumented immigrants both commit crime at lower rates than native-born Americans, meaning people who were born here in this country.
– So if you want to live in a safe neighbourhood, it is actually better for you to live in a neighbourhood with people who have just arrived in the United States.
That is of little help to someone who has been killed by illegal immigrants, responded Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies.
The Democrats ignore the death toll because they want to regard immigration as an unqualified economic and societal benefit, Krikorian said:
– Advocates of open immigration regard this view as an almost religious principle … They simply cannot say that “immigration has both costs and benefits, and on balance I am in favour of it, [and] I acknowledge that there are costs associated with it.”
These groups regard immigration as something exclusively positive, based on the “oppressor–oppressed” logic on which the left bases everything: Oppressed immigrants are morally above any criticism.
– They simply have to take this position [even though] it damages their own political prospects. This is an ideological, quasi-religious issue both for the left and for the libertarians, who have now joined forces.

To conceal the killings of Americans, the Democrats and other advocates of immigration talk about murder rates – not the number of murders – and emphasise the alleged economic benefits for employers and investors.
The negative consequences for ordinary Americans, who find themselves being outcompeted or having their wages pushed down in already low-paid jobs, do not concern such politicians. Chris Murphy is one of the Democrats who continued to talk about Russia Collusion as a reality long after the hoax had been exposed. As recently as the beginning of 2025, Murphy claimed that the White House was “an arm of the Kremlin”.

Many pro-immigration groups claim that immigrants do not affect crime statistics. For example, such groups have recently begun highlighting a report that claims:
“We find that neighbourhoods that experienced a larger increase in the share of residents without legal status did not experience … any detectable change in [the incidence of] violent crime.”
The Cato Institute makes the same argument based on figures, even though the institute’s own estimate from March 2026 shows that illegal immigrants have higher crime rates than ordinary Americans. But the Cato Institute lumps all types of immigrants together into one pot, even though Republicans also largely support legal immigration.
Illegal immigrants of Latin American origin have a crime rate of 957 per 100,000, which is far higher than the rate of 720 among white Americans and 312 among Asians.
Cato’s data also show that descendants of Latin American immigrants (1,278) and of African Americans (3,349) have a higher crime rate than the parents who arrived in the country.
These groups are defined as “native born Americans”, enabling the institute to claim that immigrants commit less crime than ordinary Americans. We recognise this tactic here in Norway as well, where new arrivals are often defined as Norwegians before they have even left the airport and learnt a single word of our language.
The Cato Institute is well known for making false claims about immigration and crime. Other reports also show that crime among immigrants is higher than Cato states.
Other organisations focus on the actual number of Americans killed by illegal immigrants, including the millions of illegal immigrants for whom Joe Biden opened the borders during his presidency.
Breitbart News and other conservative media have extensively covered murders, rapes, robberies, fatal accidents caused by drink-driving and lorry accidents affecting Americans as a result of illegal immigrants.
Cato makes entirely different claims about crime statistics, and focuses on reducing public opposition to its supporters’ demands for open borders for more immigrant workers, tenants and consumers.
Incumbent President Donald Trump managed to seal the border virtually hermetically within a few months of moving into the White House for the second time, providing a good example of how politics is more about will than ability.
With the help of the immigration and customs enforcement agency ICE, Trump and his team have also begun a large-scale removal of illegal migrants, particularly those who have been convicted of criminal activity.
These are among the reasons why many Democrats want to abolish ICE and throw the borders wide open again. The Democrats also expect to benefit politically from mass immigration, since immigrants have historically voted for the party.
