The conservative Spanish party VOX has tabled a proposal in parliament for Morocco to lose its role as co-host of the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The background is the massive invasion of the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on 30 and 31 July, when tens of thousands forced their way across the border from Morocco.
In a non-binding resolution, VOX calls on the Spanish government to ask FIFA to exclude Morocco from the event. The party believes that the events in Ceuta have shattered trust between the two countries.
FIFA has the final say
VOX accuses Morocco of using migration as a means of political pressure and claims that the kingdom has shown itself to be a ‘disloyal partner’ – both for a major sporting event and for bilateral cooperation in general. The party describes the border crossing as an ‘attack on Spain’s sovereignty’ and refers to ‘FIFA’s offer to stage the World Cup final in Morocco’ as a ‘deliberate humiliation of Spain’.
According to The Times, FIFA President Gianni Infantino is said to have offered Morocco the opportunity to host the World Cup final in Casablanca.
In addition, VOX points to Morocco’s ‘structural weaknesses’ with regard to security and the organisation of an event that is expected to attract millions of spectators.

The left-wing parties Podemos and Sumar – the latter is in government together with Pedro Sánchez’s Socialists – have also demanded that Spain should not organise the tournament together with Morocco.
In Portugal, the conservative Chega has supported the demand to exclude Morocco. So too have the green socialists of the Livre party.
Formally, it is FIFA that decides who will host the event. It is currently planned to be jointly hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
