Zelenskyy is coming to Oslo on Tuesday to seek support in the negotiations with “the major powers”, the US and Russia. The hosts are Jonas Gahr Støre and the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb.
– President Zelenskyy has asked Norway and Finland to organise a meeting as part of the diplomatic efforts currently underway at a critical time for Ukraine. Together with President Stubb, I am pleased to be hosting such a meeting here in Oslo, says Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
Trump wants to end the war before it reaches its fifth year. Neither side is able to end it on its own terms. Instead, they are carrying out terrorist bombings, primarily Russia. Ukraine is bombing Russia’s energy facilities, which is not without consequences for the global market. But when oil and gas prices rise, Norway earns more money.
Russia has not managed to capture the three regions in the Donbas, yet it is portrayed as though Russia is poised to advance westwards, as soon as it has regrouped.
The Axios website reports that Trump’s negotiator, Steve Witkoff, will also be attending. Both Støre and Stubb are staunch supporters of Zelenskyy, who is making the most of what he has.
How Støre and Stubb resolve the situation could determine the future of relations with the US. If they insist that the US will force Ukraine to capitulate, this could well have consequences. There is no prospect of Ukraine regaining the Donbas or Crimea.
