The USA is planning to strike Iran’s energy infrastructure more heavily than it has so far, and has involved Israel in the plans, sources told CBS. The attacks could take place over the weekend, the American news outlet reports.

According to several US sources, the Israelis have been informed and are now coordinating with the United States. The President has not yet given the final order to carry out the strikes, the sources said.

A joint operation would mark Israel’s return to combat operations, which the country had suspended during the ceasefire brokered by the United States. Iran has not attacked Israel since the preliminary agreement collapsed and the United States resumed military operations at the beginning of July.

Energy infrastructure, including power plants and refineries, is likely to be targeted, two of the sources said.

A former US military officer told CBS that the purpose of targeting the energy infrastructure would be to weaken the Iranian military’s ability to provide services and exercise effective governance.

According to an Iranian security source quoted by the semi-official Iranian news agency Tasnim News, Tehran is preparing retaliatory strikes should the United States once again display “recklessness”, The Jerusalem Post reports.

According to the report, the official said the contingency plan includes attacks on critical infrastructure in Israel and US energy infrastructure in the region.
