The newly elected leader of Rød Ungdom, Alexandra Fredwall (19), says in an interview with Nettavisen on TikTok that abortion up to the week before term should be permitted.

– Rød Ungdom has a quite different abortion policy from everyone else. We do not want a week-based limit on self-determined abortion, says Fredwall.

As of 1 June 2025, the right to self-determined abortion was extended, such that one may, entirely without further justification, terminate a pregnancy up to and including week 18. For late abortions after week 18, one must have the case assessed by a board (nemnd).

– I want free abortion, says Fredwall. – I believe that if one has an abortion in consultation with a doctor, then I do not think it is for the state to decide how many weeks may pass before it will have a negative consequence for the woman who has an abortion.

– So you mean that one can have an abortion in week 30, for example, if one wants that?

– If one wants that, and it does not have a negative effect on the woman. One can talk as much as one likes about viability and all that, but it is in a way. It is somewhat difficult. No, I shall not talk about viability, says the RU leader.

Fredwall elaborates in a comment that a week limit is a form of “moralistic policy”.
