Voters have given the Trump administration a wake-up call. Two candidates defy the usual political norms: Talarico in Texas and Abdul el-Sayed in Michigan. Talarico is an example of a ‘made-up’ politician: someone who seems to have been pieced together like Lego bricks. The media call him “Christian”. He believes God is non-binary, i.e. neither male nor female. That makes it difficult to pray the “Lord’s Prayer”.
This is the essence of ‘woke’. One might think such a candidate wouldn’t stand a chance in conservative Texas. But the voters proved such assumptions wrong. They are showing a willingness to break established rules about what is possible. Everything has, in fact, become possible following this election.
It was widely accepted that the Democratic Socialists of America were so far out of the mainstream that they stood no chance in the congressional elections.
Just before the election in Michigan, it emerged that Hasan Piker’s uncle had produced a campaign video blaming Israel for high food prices. Hasan Piker is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and believes the US deserved 9/11. Abdul el-Sayed has been asked to distance himself from him, but has not done so. He did, however, distance himself from his colleague Haley Stevens when she switched sides and supported his rival Mike Rogers.
Stevens was condemned by the Democratic leadership, both locally and in Congress, including by Senate leader Chuck Schumer.
El-Sayed has close ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, and many traditional Democrats had hoped he would lose.
El-Sayed’s victory paves the way for Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez to stand in 2028.
The election campaign begins now.
When Trump says he is willing to cooperate, this does not apply to the Democrats. The leadership has been sharpening its knives for a long time and will do everything in its power not only to thwart Trump’s agenda, but also to launch new investigations with a view to impeachment.
Some have warned the Democrats against taking this path, but there is no indication that they have changed their minds. Trump has survived two impeachment trials.
The Democrats’ top man on the Oversight Committee, Robert Garcia, says they will target the Trump family and Attorney General Todd Blanche. The Democrats can slow down the Republicans’ work and agenda. They will have to devote their energies to defending themselves.
But it is not certain that voters will appreciate the Democrats devoting their energies to pursuing the Trump administration. They want to see results.
The Democrats did not capitalise on all the proceedings under Biden.
No equality before the law
A major source of frustration amongst MAGA voters is that, in two years with a majority in both chambers, they have failed to bring any of Obama and Biden’s top officials to justice, despite all the evidence of abuse of the intelligence services and the judicial system. People such as CIA Director John Brennan, Susan Rice, Lisa Monaco, Merrick Garland, James Comey, Avril Haines, the Biden family, and a host of FBI agents. Documents have been released showing a conspiracy against Trump, but so far little has happened in legal terms.
A major stumbling block is judges who are blocking every move.
They are also blocking the prosecution of illegal immigrants who are guilty of serious crimes.
They are simply let off.
These are suicidal moves and do not represent what we associate with a liberal USA.
In this climate, will Trump be able to prosecute Ilhan Omar? Doubtful.
She has now found an ally in the Senate in Abdul el-Sayed.
25 years after 9/11, the enemy sits in Congress and is mayor of the city that was attacked.
