The report that Trump has achieved a complete victory on Greenland is at odds with the picture painted by the Danish media, which Mette Frederiksen and the commentators have made no attempt to correct.
No text of the agreement has been released by the Danish or Greenlandic sides. The Greenlandic Prime Minister is cheerful; Frederiksen is reticent.
Berlingske’s US correspondent, Jacob Heinel Jensen, writes that we shouldn’t make too much of the fact that it is Denmark that has won on all counts. This is how a journalist speaks who cannot bear to admit defeat.
It is also a defeat for Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, Ursula von der Leyen and Jonas Gahr Støre.
Von der Leyen is building castles in the air. She wanted to offer Canada associate membership. Trump was blunt in his reply: Out of the question!
A Canada–EU alliance would destroy Trump’s geostrategic plan for the whole of the Americas and the North Atlantic hemisphere. It is a plan on which Norway also depends for its defence. But instead of teaming up with Trump, Støre invited participants to a Nordic summit on the High North, with a special invitation to Carney, who was only too happy to accept.
Støre must have lost touch with reality. Secretary-General Mark Rutte came up from Brussels for this very purpose and gave Støre a dressing-down – a sharp reprimand. This was on 19 March.

The Nordic prime ministers attended the Nordic summit, which focused on the High North and was a response to Trump’s desire to control Greenland. Trump was portrayed as a boorish imperialist, whilst the Social Democrats championed cooperation.
If the agreement on Greenland is as brilliant as Trump and Rubio claim, Carney, Støre and Frederiksen have suffered a crushing defeat.
The Norwegian media have been cheering on Carney, particularly since his speech in Davos, and hoping that he would humiliate Trump.
They have lost touch with reality.
Latin America
We hear little about the US’s advances on the Latin American continent, where Marco Rubio is forging alliances with one right-wing government after another. He has recently been on a tour that began in Colombia and included a meeting with the newly elected president, Abelardo De La Espriella. It was just one month after the devastating earthquake. Rubio is signing agreements to combat the power and influence of the cartels, as well as agreements on critical minerals. In Ecuador, the Los Tiguerones cartel was added to the list of global terrorist organisations.
It is these factors that have led to the seizure of 22 kilos of cocaine in Trysil; the drugs came via Amsterdam, but the media have been reluctant to highlight just how serious the threat from the cartels is. They form part of the unholy alliance against Trump.
Two regimes are on the brink of collapse: Nicaragua and Cuba. Ortega has now amended the constitution so that democracy has been abolished as a form of government. Not much is being said about that. The Sandinistas were heroes for a long time.
Cuba is experiencing its 12th power cut. But the elite are not just living the high life; they also trade in nickel and have a vast security and intelligence apparatus that is completely out of all proportion. Cuba has played a role several tiers above its size, a fact the Norwegian media never touch upon.
Cuba remains a sentimental dream.
Canada’s Prime Minister: ‘Muslim values are Canadian values’
It’s easy to see why the socialists hate Trump. Their vision cannot withstand the test of reality. This applies to the EU, and it applies to Scandinavia.
NRK correspondent Anders Børringbo said this week – whilst Carney was a guest at the European Parliament – that the EU has now encircled the US through agreements in Latin America.
They are living in a fantasy world.
