Just days after Pedro Sánchez absolved Morocco of responsibility for the invasion of Ceuta, the country’s own police have pulled the rug from under him with a report that delivers a damning verdict: Morocco organised the invasion as part of a plan to wrest control of the enclave from Spain.
The report was submitted to Judge María Tardón, who is currently investigating how an estimated 80,000 illegal immigrants from Morocco managed to storm the Spanish border and enter the exclave of Ceuta between 30 and 31 July. The continuing crisis has continued, and as many as 9,000 people still remain in the city, which has a population of only 83,000.
In contrast to the countless possible masterminds behind the invasion that the left-wing government in Madrid has pointed to, the Spanish National Police accused the Muslim Moroccan government of having orchestrated the invasion, which according to the report was an operation to undermine Spain’s sovereignty over the North African territory, El Mundo reports.
The police report claimed to have evidence from the National Centre for Immigration and Borders (CENIF) that uniformed Moroccan gendarmes were present at the scene in Castillejos, a town on the other side of the border from Ceuta, on the day of the invasion, directing the flow of migrants towards the fence separating the two countries.
The report further states that the police are in possession of «concrete evidence» showing Moroccan government agents in civilian clothes giving instructions to the uniformed gendarmes as to where the migrants should be sent, specifically towards the sea around the fence.
This occurred only a few weeks after the Spanish Supreme Court ruled that illegal immigrants who arrived by sea could not be sent back, opening a loophole in the Ceuta area whereby migrants could simply walk into the water on the Moroccan side of the border and technically arrive on Spanish territory by sea a few feet farther along the coastline.
According to the National Police, the invasion was part of an orchestrated effort by the Islamic Alaouite government to assert its claims to Ceuta and the Spanish autonomous city of Melilla, which, like Ceuta, lies on the North African coast bordering Morocco.
Sánchez cannot have been unaware of the information that emerged while the invasion was still under way. What interest does he have in undermining confidence in his own authorities?
Even the EU admitted on Tuesday that it has no evidence that external actors attempted to influence and trigger the invasion.
That makes Sánchez’s statements all the more embarrassing. They verge on treason.
The Maghreb countries – Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia – already have millions on the Iberian Peninsula. Why should they not dream of the restoration of al-Andalus? The Muslim dream that was a nightmare for the Spaniards.
The conservative opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo said that the National Police report showed that Prime Minister Sánchez «is incapable of protecting and guaranteeing the security of the nation», since «he does not defend the integrity of the nation».
«We are talking about the most important duty any leader has. The only way out is to call an election and give the people their voice back», he said, adding that «the government has lied to us and protected Morocco more than the Spaniards».
