The drone incident at Leipzig Airport on Wednesday was a close call. The drone that was discovered had explosives on board and was only a few metres from two Antonov aircraft full of ammunition for Ukraine. An alert bus driver averted the catastrophe.
\
The hero was an ordinary driver of one of the airport’s visitor buses who was on his way back to the garage at around midnight on Tuesday night. When he happened to drive past the airport’s cargo area, where two gigantic Ukrainian Antonov An-124 aircraft were parked, his eyes widened. Near the aircraft, he saw a drone hovering motionless in the air, just a few metres from the planes. We do not know exactly what went through the driver’s mind. But if the reports in, among others, Die Zeit are to be believed, he acted both calmly and in exemplary fashion.
He promptly parked the bus, walked over to the drone and forced it down to the ground before alerting the authorities.
Then things became hectic. All flights to and from the airport were diverted. One of them struck an object – possibly another drone – a few kilometres away and had to make an emergency landing. Meanwhile, the police examined the drone, which, according to German media, turned out to contain 800 grams of PETN and Semtex explosives and, fortunately, a defective detonator.
In addition, a DHL aircraft flew into an object at an altitude of 400 metres and had to be diverted to Hanover. In all likelihood, that too was a drone.
In other words, Leipzig may have been subjected to a drone attack intended to strike Ukrainian Antonov aircraft.
The war is escalating. Both sides are attacking each other deep inside the other’s territory. In addition, there is the war against the Russian shadow fleet and the Russian navy. Every attack constitutes a “trip wire”, meaning that it can trigger retaliatory action.\
