Democratic Socialists of America has unveiled a programme so radical that it shatters all boundaries. They simply want to abolish the republic. The Senate is to be abolished. All power is to be concentrated in Congress. At the same time, with borders, prisons and the police all to be abolished, the United States would be overwhelmed.
Megan Romer is one of the organisation’s two leaders. She appeared for an interview with Shannon Bream on Fox Sunday and made no attempt to conceal what they stand for: revolution.
SHANNON BREAM: We’re going to put some of the items from your platform on the screen. And I’m going to ask you to answer “true” or “false” to these. Abolish the Senate?
ROMER: True.
BREAM: OK, replace the presidency and the Supreme Court as we know them today?
ROMER: Yep.
BREAM: Abolish ICE?
ROMER: Absolutely.
BREAM: Abolish borders and grant amnesty to everyone currently residing illegally in the United States?
ROMER: As a long-term plan, yes.
BREAM: Cut funding for the Pentagon?
ROMER: Absolutely.
BREAM: Abolish prisons, at least to a large extent?
ROMER: Yes, again, as part of a long-term programme, yes.
BREAM: OK, so no prisons. State or public ownership of most major companies?
ROMER: Yes, absolutely.
BREAM: OK, then let’s go back over some of these: abolish the Senate. There are people in the Senate now who fully support the DSA. Do they lose their seats?
ROMER: Well, the Senate is an anachronistic institution, and it derives from the British House of Lords. It is designed to protect power. You know, the Senate was part of the system that was created to ensure that the people did not have too much influence. So we want to expand Congress considerably, but make it a unicameral legislature.
Commentators may say that these statements amount to an endless series of own goals. But the fact is that the DSA represents a trend in today’s United States that appeals to a segment of young people. They have an affinity for socialism, they are disillusioned with capitalism, and they are willing to try something new. They are not deterred by historical experience.
Zohran Mamdani in New York is proof of that. So too are several victories in primary elections, from New York to Colorado.
Veterans such as Chuck Schumer risk being swept aside. Even Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is struggling to keep up.
For the Republicans, the DSA is a gift. That was probably why they were invited onto Fox. The channel wanted the average American to see how crazy they are.
The Democrats face enormous problems and risk being torn apart. There is no unifying force. No centre holding the party together, other than hatred of Trump.
One person who experienced this was Dan Goldman of New York. He lost his primary election and was refused service at a local coffee shop on the grounds that they did not serve accomplices to genocide. There is an ugly side to the new radicalism that now evokes disturbing associations.
