Trump says the United States is halting all trade with Spain. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez refused to allow the Americans to use bases in Spain during the war with Iran. In addition, Sánchez has opened the doors to more than a million illegal migrants and allows them to remain. They are free to travel wherever they wish within the Schengen Area. This is the same policy Biden pursued.
Not long ago, Sánchez hosted a congress in Barcelona that amounted to a mobilisation against Trump’s policies. Trump’s fiercest opponents took part.
Sánchez is playing several leagues above what Spain’s economic strength would suggest. Trump now wants to make it clear who is the boss.
He also has an ongoing dispute with Italy’s Giorgia Meloni that is not easy to make sense of.
The question is how the other allies will react. Trump does not pull his punches. He mentioned Greenland when he arrived in Ankara, and Mette Frederiksen took it badly.
