The Dutch protests against new asylum reception centres are no longer confined to social media and indignation in front of the television. The demonstrations have previously proceeded relatively peacefully in most municipalities, but on Saturday evening and during the night into Sunday 3 May, the situation escalated sharply in the idyllic small town of IJsselstein.
In the small town near Utrecht, stones were thrown at the windows of the town hall and an adjacent theatre. Windows were smashed, doors damaged, and several forms of vandalism were reported. Police officers who responded were met with fireworks. One police officer sustained minor injuries when fireworks exploded near his head.
– An attack on the town
Mayor (burgemeester) Ester Weststeijn has condemned the protests and called them “an attack on the town”. She directly links the protests to opposition against the municipality’s plan to establish a temporary asylum reception centre for 100–150 asylum seekers for six months.
IJsselstein is only one of several places where local residents are protesting against the national dispersal law, which compels municipalities to receive asylum seekers in order to relieve the overcrowded reception centre in Ter Apel. Similar demonstrations have, among other places, taken place in Loosdrecht, Engelen and Tilburg in recent weeks, with varying degrees of unrest.
Several politicians claim that organised groups from outside the local communities are contributing to the intensification of the protests.
– After venting their frustration over the asylum seekers on social media and in front of the television screen for several years, it seems that the mood is now becoming somewhat darker. And of course one can point to “extremists”, but one can also ask oneself: why has so much been promised and nothing delivered over the past ten years? asks EWagensveld.
