Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO) does not trust the Iranian authorities’ official death toll of 3117 and urges the UN to initiate a fact-finding mission. Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam believes as many as 25,000 may have been killed.

– The figure announced by the Islamic Republic authorities, 3117 deaths, has no credibility whatsoever. All the evidence that has gradually emerged from inside Iran shows that the real number of people killed in the protests is far higher than the official figure,” said IHRNGO Director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam in a press release on Thursday.

He believes that the statistics are primarily intended for the outside world as, according to Amiry-Moghaddam, the Iranian population is aware of both the extent of the protests and that the protesters have been subjected to targeted killings.

The announcement of this figure on the eve of the UN Human Rights Council’s emergency meeting is a deliberate attempt to influence the outcome of the meeting and mislead world opinion,

Friday, the UN Human Rights Council will hold an emergency meeting on the situation in Iran in Geneva. The main focus is the violence against protesters.

His group says they can document 3,428 killings.
