US President Donald Trump is attempting to keep both Israel and Iran in check following yesterday’s Iranian missile attack.
As Document reported last night, Iran has attacked Israel with missiles for the first time since the ceasefire on 8 April. This is tantamount to throwing down the gauntlet to both Israel and the United States.
The attack is said, according to the Wall Street Journal, to be Iran’s response to an Israeli attack on the Iran-backed Hezbollah in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, earlier the same day. Iran, as is well known, wishes to include Lebanon in the peace negotiations.
Trump says that he is also dissatisfied with Israel’s attack on Hezbollah, according to the Times of Israel.
– If Netanyahu responds to the attack, this is only going to continue for another 47 years or for 3,000 years, Trump told Axios.
Trump believes that a peace agreement is very close.
The Israeli government sees things differently.
– The IDF will strike the enemy with force as soon as the green light is given, says Israel’s Defence Minister Eyal Zamir. (NTB-Reuters-AFP)
Israel is eager to continue the war against Iran until the mission is completed. Trump is under pressure from all sides and has for two months chosen to focus on finding a solution through negotiations.
The problem is simply that Iran is expert at dragging out such negotiations, and it may be that Trump and his team are soon beginning to lose patience.
No Israelis are reported to have been killed or injured in the attack, but schools will remain closed on Monday for security reasons.
In Iran, all flights to and from the airport serving the capital have been cancelled, according to the Iranian state news agency IRNA.
