Norwegian tabloid VG editor-in-chief Gard Steiro went for Hans Rustad’s throat, arguing that if the Document editor did not understand the limitations that come with being a member of the Norwegian Editors’ Association, it was like ‘an arsonist joining the Norwegian Fire Protection Association’.
On Tuesday evening, tensions were running high in NRK’s studio at Marienlyst in Oslo.
Present was editor-in-chief Hans Rustad, who faced Harald Klungtveit of far-left blog Filter Nyheter, PR adviser and former Labour Party adviser Svein Tore Bergestuen, and VG editor-in-chief Gard Steiro.
There were some rhetorical broadsides in both directions. While Rustad attacked the press for being left-wing, Steiro counterattacked.
– You boil everything down to moralism, Rustad argued.
Steiro insisted that he was not offended at being called part of the deep state.
– I am not offended at all, he says.
But Steiro argued that Rustad had voluntarily restricted his own freedom of expression by becoming a member of the Editors’ Association.
– If he does not do that, then I do not understand why he wants to be a member. It is like an arsonist joining the Norwegian Fire Protection Association, Steiro says.
