Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced on 1 July that the state will designate the Muslim Brotherhood, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and Antifa as terrorist organisations.

The designations are being made pursuant to HB 1471, which came into force the same day. The law gives the Florida Department of Law Enforcement the authority to recommend organisations for designation as terrorist organisations. Final approval is given by the Governor and the state government.

More than 90 terrorist organisations are next in line

DeSantis stated that the designations additionally encompass more than 90 foreign terrorist organisations, including several cartels. He justified the decision by citing the need to combat radical ideology and protect the state.

The designations build on an earlier executive order from December 2025, in which CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood were designated as terrorist organisations. The executive order was temporarily blocked by a federal court.

CAIR is taking legal action against the designation, which it maintains is unconstitutional. The organisation denies any connection to terrorist activity.
