The Muslim Brotherhood infiltrates society and abuses democracy. It should be designated as a terrorist organisation, and mosques and institutions should be scrutinised. That is the view of the Christian Democrats (Kristdemokraterna) in Sweden, who also wish to halt foreign financing from extremists to foundations, associations and congregations in Sweden. They also want to stop the disbursement of Swedish taxpayers’ money to extreme organisations.
“The imported Islamism that has taken root in Sweden is a threat to society. That is to say, the kind that expresses itself through antisemitism, honour-based violence and rejection of Swedish society. One of the clearest examples of this is the Muslim Brotherhood”, writes party leader and Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch on Facebook. And further:
Time to rise against what harms us
For a trust-based society such as Sweden, this is particularly serious. It is time for Sweden to rise and stand up against what harms us. We believe in Sweden and in our Swedish assessments, writes Busch. And further:
The Brotherhood strategically infiltrates associations, study associations, religious communities and schools in order to present itself as an ordinary network within civil society, but the real motive is to exploit democracy’s own institutions and instruments against society. That Hamas is a direct offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood is no coincidence. Nor is the fact that polarisation, parallel societies and violent conflicts in its wake follow as a consequence. It is not surprising that several Arab countries have banned the organisation, writes Busch.
The Brotherhood banned in several Arab countries
It is correct that several Arab countries have banned the Muslim Brotherhood. Such as Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt. The Brotherhood also has evident plans to Islamise the United States and the West. The United States is also working to classify the Brotherhood as global terrorists.

Wants the EU to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as terrorists
Kristdemokraterna in Sweden want the EU to designate parts of the Muslim Brotherhood as terrorists. In addition, sanctions should be introduced against Islamist networks, the party believes. Party leader Ebba Busch has written an opinion piece in Dagens Nyheter, together with the politicians Alice Teodorescu Måwe and Magnus Berntsson, all from the same party, under the headline “We have been naïve and cowardly in the face of the threat from Islamism”.
Brotherhood expert has become a Christian Democrat
The article is also shared by Sameh Egyptson, the researcher who has received much criticism from Islamist and Islam-apologetic environments, as he has researched Islamic infiltration and extremism in Sweden and the Nordic countries, and not least the Muslim Brotherhood, about which he has written several books, and ultimately also had his doctoral dissertation, based on 20 years of research on the subject, approved by Lund University. Today he is a member of Kristdemokraterna and, as a politician, can certainly contribute much knowledge and insight. Unlike many other researchers and commentators on the subject, he, with his background from Egypt, is also Arabic-speaking and can himself examine the sources thoroughly.
On Facebook, Egyptson writes that the article from the party leadership of Kristdemokraterna is an important defence of democracy against Islamist networks, and that there is a need to clearly mark the boundary for organisations that undermine the rule of law.
Democracy must be defended against the Brotherhood
This is now a clear part of the Christian Democrats’ political line: to confront the structures of the Muslim Brotherhood with consistent action – both nationally and at EU level. The question is not symbolic. It is structural. Ultimately, it concerns how an open society protects itself against ideologies that use the freedoms of democracy to weaken it.
Egyptson also writes that Sweden must combine security policy instruments with a long-term and principled stance towards movements that exploit our institutions to their advantage. And he believes it is of decisive importance that Sweden acts in a united, clear and consistent manner. Offering united action may perhaps lie somewhat further ahead when it comes to confronting the challenges of Islamism, but Egyptson and Kristdemokraterna surely have many with them in believing that it is Islam that must adapt in order to be welcome in Sweden and Europe. And not the other way round.
Sameh Egyptson is among several researchers who have linked the Rabita mosque in Oslo to the Muslim Brotherhood, a mosque that has been visited by Prime Minister Støre, members of the Royal Family and by priests and bishops, and which is in the process of building a grand mosque in the centre of Oslo.
