In 2022 the then 9-year-old Luna was brutally attacked and raped in Skellefteå in northern Sweden. She sustained brain injuries in the attack, but is now in the process of learning to walk again. This is reported by SVT.
The rehabilitation is progressing. “I am very glad and proud”, says mum Emelie.
Every day Luna trains together with her family and her assistants in order to regain various skills. The rehabilitation consists among other things of balance exercises, that she tries to sit by herself both on the edge of the bed and on the floor, or that she works with an eye-controlled computer.
“We try to get her to move more on her own”, Emelie relates.
Luna’s parents and carers try to make the rehabilitation as fun as possible, but it was difficult in the beginning when the snow put a stop to the walking frame and she could only walk back and forth in the corridor.
“Now that we are outside, she finds it fun. She often tries to stretch and take down leaves from the trees”, says mum Emelie.
Luna is making great progress: In the beginning she could only walk for ten minutes, but now she can be outside for half an hour or more.
Today Luna is 12 years old and goes to school, admittedly in her own room and with a special teacher. Everyday life, marked by rehabilitation, is back for the family in Skellefteå.
“Our goal has all the time been to return to as normal an everyday life as possible”, says mum Emelie, who again can work full time.
After the violence Luna’s family has long fought for a legislative change so that the authorities can share more information with one another in order to prevent crimes.
SVT writes that the so-called Lex Luna entered into force on 1 April 2025. It entails that headmasters in some cases are obliged to give information to the police authorities. The purpose is to improve the preconditions for preventing and combating crime.
The information is to be given both on the school’s own initiative and on request, and entails that the duty of confidentiality is broken with authority in the Public Access to Information and Secrecy Act chapter 10, § 28.
The background for Lex Luna, as the law is called, was that already before the assault there existed warning signals about the then 15-year-old perpetrator.

On Thursday 7 July 2022 9-year-old Luna in Skellefteå was on her way home with her bicycle. Then she was suddenly brutally attacked at a playground by the Ethiopian migrant Abushi Shamse Kamal. Samnytt reports that he had been granted permanent residence permit in Sweden only a few days earlier, despite the fact that he was described as a “ticking bomb”.
He subjected her to rape and grotesque acts of violence. In interrogation Kamal has related that he stopped strangling Luna with her shoelaces only when he was convinced that she was dead. She survived the attempted murder, but is injured for life, both physically and psychologically. The perpetrator’s violence led to serious brain injuries.
Kamal was later sentenced for aggravated rape of a child and attempted murder. The court established in its judgment that the nine-year-old girl “must have felt strong death anxiety” during the prolonged and torture-like maltreatment.
