New York Mayor, the Islamist Zohran Mamdani, demonises Israel and its supporters. Just like our Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, Mamdani repeatedly uses the term “genocide”.

Perhaps he should reconsider his choice of words after Thursday’s double stabbing attack in New York, in which, among others, a Jew wearing a kippah was attacked after leaving a synagogue, The Wall Street Journal writes in an editorial.

Raul Morales, who has been arrested in connection with the stabbing attacks, is yet another of those we have become accustomed to hearing shout Allahu Akbar during an attack, this time on the Jew Moshe Grunhaus and the Asian Chok Sung. The New York Police Department (NYPD) is now assessing whether this was a hate crime.

The victim, Grunhaus, had planned to move from New York City to Florida precisely because of his fear of anti-Semitism, crime and Mamdani. He had returned to New York to attend to some practical matters.

Earlier this week, Mamdani released a video accusing Israel of genocide and the deliberate killing of children. The following day, he wished New York’s Jews a “peaceful” fast, during which “the mourners will pause and reflect on the history and resilience of the Jewish people”.

Mamdani appears to overlook that the history of the Jewish people is rooted in Jerusalem and the Land of Israel. The Islamist, who describes himself as a democratic socialist, calls the Jewish state a “settler colony”.

Nor is there any indication that Mamdani values the Jews’ long and proud history in the city he has been elected to govern. He is highly selective when choosing which immigrants deserve praise.

The mayor and his allies have been eager to “globalise the intifada”. In that respect, a knife attack on a Jew in New York fits perfectly. Mamdani has admittedly been pressured into “discouraging” the use of that expression. But what difference does that make when he continues to use terms such as “genocide”, “apartheid”, child murder and other accusations to portray Israel as an enemy of humanity?

He also refers to “Zionists”, those who support Israel’s right to exist, as criminals.

Before running for office, Mamdani used “Zionist” as an informal term of abuse, telling his circle of supporters:

“We need to make it clear that when the NYPD’s boot is on your neck, it’s laced by the Israel Defense Forces.”

Mamdani is so radical that his reaction to the 7 October terror attack was to attack the Jews and Israel, not the terrorists who raped, slaughtered and murdered even small children, while jubilantly telephoning their parents to boast about their deeds.

His wife liked Instagram posts praising the Hamas attack. His party, the Democratic Socialists of America in New York, endorsed a demonstration organised by pro-Hamas groups the very next day after the terrorist attack, “in solidarity with the Palestinian people and their right to resist”, as the DSA put it.

What is perhaps the world’s most famous city, in the United States, now has a political leader who appears to believe that brutal assaults and the murder of random civilians are a legitimate form of “resistance”. Islamists are in the process of securing positions in several urban areas controlled by the Democrats. Some of them deliver their political speeches in languages from the Islamic shit hole countries from which they originate.

At the same time, Mamdani is sending the bill for what is being called an “anti-Semitism levy” to Jewish schools, synagogues and other institutions connected to New York’s Jewish community. The Jews themselves must finance their own security against Islamist terrorism. It is almost unbelievable that so many Jews in New York, who largely support the Democrats, actually voted for Mamdani.

The future of the Jews in New York looks bleak, as youth culture is marked by the same hatred of Jews.

Mamdani is not responsible for Thursday’s stabbings. But he is responsible for fostering a culture of denigration that makes it far too easy for an agitated mind to hear his message and conclude that violence against Jews is acceptable.

The mayor and his ideological followers are playing with the fire of anti-Semitism, and they are fully aware of what they are doing.

“When I was growing up, the only time we saw security guards outside my synagogue or my Jewish school was when the mayor came to give a speech. The police were there to protect him. Today, every time the mayor gives a speech, we need the police to protect us,” Rabbi Yosie Levine said on Friday.

In 2026, the Jews of New York must fear the city’s own political leadership, many of whom they themselves voted into office.
