Zohran Mamdani has frightened many establishment Democrats, people such as Chuck Schumer, Dan Goldman, and Jerry Nadler. They were accustomed to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez being the most radical figure from New York. Suddenly, she is a centrist. Those taking over are militant socialists, and if they represent the future, then the Democrats will cease to be a liberal party.
One of those who lost the primary election in New York was Representative Dan Goldman. On election day, he stopped at a coffee shop to use the toilet for his daughter. To thank them for their kindness, he bought a coffee. The barista could not have been friendlier. The owners, however, were not. When they discovered who had visited the café, they posted a message stating that they did not welcome visits from politicians or others who supported Israel. He was simply not welcome.
Dan Goldman is hardly a choirboy himself. He has built a profile on being as confrontational towards Trump as possible. After Butler, he said that Trump had to be “eliminated” — that was the word he used.
But now he is being treated qua Jew, by virtue of being a Jew, and that is something quite different.
It says something about the kind of socialism that has arrived in America. It is the red-green variety that we also see in, among other places, the United Kingdom.
