Norwegian authorities have once again been found guilty of violating rights by the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. The Court has ruled in favour of Line and Per, TV 2 reports after speaking with the couple’s lawyer, Rikke Arnesen. Once again, it is compulsory adoption that has led to Norway’s condemnation. Norwegian authorities place children for adoption and weaken the connection to their biological parents to such an extent that reunification becomes impossible. Norway has now been found in violation 24 times over the past nine years.
The parents have also been awarded €25,000 and will have part of their legal costs covered.
The courts supported the Child Welfare Services and decided on the compulsory adoption of the child, who is of Tater (Traveller) descent, four years ago.
Article 8 concerns the right to family life. This is the provision that Norwegian authorities systematically violate or show little respect for. The judgments are damaging to Norway’s reputation.
The judgments concern the fact that the system has been geared towards permanent care orders, has placed too little emphasis on reunification, and has allowed far too little contact. The grounds for compulsory adoption have also not been sufficiently weighty.
