Keir Starmer has been placed in considerable embarrassment following a series of attacks against Jewish targets. There were attacks both on Friday and on Saturday evening. There was no major damage either to property or to persons, but that the aim is to harm British Jews creates considerable unease.
On Saturday evening, Kenton United Synagogue in the Harrow area was struck. There was minor smoke damage to a room inside the synagogue, but no major damage, according to the Community Security Trust, which works to combat antisemitism.
This occurred after a series of similar incidents. On Friday, a commercial building with ties to the Jewish local community was subjected to an attempted arson attack, while two suspects were arrested earlier in the week for an attempt to start a fire at another synagogue.
An area around the Israeli embassy in London was cordoned off following reports that it was a target for drones equipped with “dangerous substances”. The police later stated that they had not found any toxic or dangerous substances.
Starmer writes on X that it is abhorrent.
– This is abhorrent and will not be tolerated. Attacks against our Jewish community are attacks against the United Kingdom, he writes on X.
A couple of weeks ago, four ambulances belonging to a Jewish emergency service were set on fire in the Jewish area of Golders Green.
The United Kingdom’s Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis writes on X that a “sustained campaign of violence and threats against the Jewish community in the United Kingdom is gaining momentum”.
The London police have increased their presence following the incidents. A pro-Iranian group has claimed responsibility for most of them.
That the attacks have connections to Iran also gives rise to considerable unease and uncertainty. Thus far, Starmer has not taken any action vis-à-vis Iran.
