Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is sinking deeper – that is, closer to losing her citizenship and facing deportation – after it emerged that her real name is Nur Said Elmi, which happens to be the same surname as her brother’s. She is said to have married him in order to get him into the US.
Omar has now been caught out in one forgery after another.
If she is sitting in Congress under an alias, she is in serious trouble.
Conservative commentator Will Chamberlain was the first to post on X, where he speculated that “the Department of Justice believes [Omar] is residing in the US under a false identity”.
Fox News Digital has now learnt from several sources with knowledge of the investigation that Omar is not the MP’s birth name.
Nathan Hansen, a former federal immigration judge in Minnesota, says that all the applications and declarations Omar has signed may not only be invalid but could also result in criminal liability. It is illegal to sign an official document with a false name. The fact that she sits in Congress does not make it any better.
“If this is not a genuine legal name, it nevertheless provides a certain legal basis for all sorts of official forms she has filled in throughout her life to be called into question,” said Hansen.
As an elected representative, one has an extra responsibility.
The representative for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district in the US House of Representatives has long been subject to allegations that she married her brother for immigration purposes.
In 2009, she entered into a legal marriage with a man named Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. The couple separated in 2017. The following year, she was elected to Congress. In 2020, she married her third husband, the political adviser Tim Mynett.
On Thursday, Omar was interviewed by Chris Hayes for MSNBC, who asked her whether Ahmed Nur Said Elmi was her brother.
“Not as far as I know,” she replied.
That’s the sort of answer you give to keep all options open.
