If we are to believe the reasons given by Moroccan men for seeking asylum in Spain following the invasion of Ceuta, they have become gay in recent weeks.
Just a couple of weeks ago, most asylum seekers cited economic reasons and a desire for a better life as the grounds for seeking asylum in Spain, with unrestricted access to Europe.
Homosexual acts are punishable by up to three years’ imprisonment in Morocco
According to police sources quoted by, amongst others, the newspaper ABC, the pattern has changed significantly in a short space of time. In around 70 per cent of recent asylum applications from Moroccan men, persecution on the grounds of sexual orientation is now cited – they are gay men who risk punishment if returned to Morocco.
Spanish police are wondering whether there might be advisers with insight into the immigration authorities’ priorities who are guiding these ‘asylum’ seekers. Homosexual acts carry prison sentences of between six months and three years in Morocco. In principle, this could form the basis for protection within the EU.
Despite the large number of applications from gay Moroccans, the number of rejections is massive. According to police sources, between 90 and 99 per cent of applications are rejected.
SPAIN: 70 per cent of the 80,000 Moroccan men who invaded Ceuta last July are reportedly claiming to be gay in their asylum applications.

According to the Spanish authorities, simply declaring oneself to be gay is not enough. Each case is assessed individually. A credible account, an assessment of the specific risk involved in returning, and a certain degree of objective evidence are required. A mere assertion is insufficient.
The sudden shift in the grounds for being allowed to remain in Europe is regarded by critics as an example of the asylum system being exploited strategically.
