Norway will be without Julian Ryerson when they face Ivory Coast in the World Cup last 32 in Dallas on Tuesday, after the defender failed to recover from the injury he suffered in the 3–2 win over Senegal, Reuters reports.
Coach Ståle Solbakken said Ivory Coast are among the most physical teams in the tournament, making Ryerson’s absence a setback before Norway’s first World Cup knockout match since returning to the tournament for the first time since 1998.
Norway reached the knockout round after victories over Iraq and Senegal. Solbakken then made major changes for the final group match against France, which Norway lost 4–1, with several first-choice players rested before the knockout stage.
Ivory Coast also have injury concerns. Defender Wilfried Singo is out with a hamstring injury, while Evan Ndicka is available. Coach Emerse Faé has said his team must deal with Norway’s organisation and the threat of Erling Haaland, who has scored four goals in two World Cup matches, according to Reuters.
The winner of Norway–Ivory Coast will face Brazil in the next round after Brazil beat Japan 2–1 in their last-32 match, with Gabriel Martinelli scoring the late winner.
