The head of the Iranian paramilitary Basij force, Gholamreza Soleimani, has been killed in an Israeli attack.
This is confirmed by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), writes Times of Israel and other Israeli media.
– Yesterday, the Israeli Air Force acted on the basis of military intelligence and attacked and eliminated Gholamreza Soleimani, who has been the commander of the Basij unit for the past six years, writes the IDF in a statement on Tuesday.
Basij is known for its role in the violent suppression of protests against the regime, and is assumed to be responsible for countless deaths among Iranian civilians.
The group is often referred to as elite soldiers, but an equally appropriate term is a terrorist group.
The IDF also confirms that during the night they carried out an attack against the Iranian top politician Ali Larijani in Tehran. It is still unclear whether Larijani was killed.
At the same time, the attacks against Lebanon are ongoing. Akram al-Ajouri, the supreme leader of the terrorist group Islamic Jihad, and other senior leaders of the group, were struck by the IDF in an attack on Wednesday.
The IDF considers it likely that al-Ajouri and several of his close associates were killed in the attack, but this has not been confirmed.
