Island was, according to plan, to hold a referendum on the EU next year, but according to two sources Politico has spoken with, it may be brought forward to August. The background is the dispute over Greenland and tariffs. The EU seeks to counterbalance Trump. Norway, too, may be drawn into the slipstream.
The two anonymous sources may have been planted, precisely in order to influence opinion in favour of membership.
It is said that the date will be announced in a few weeks.
Ukraine is also mentioned as a factor.
Iceland halted the negotiations with the EU in 2013. The present government has promised to hold a referendum in 2027 on whether they are to be resumed.
The backdrop is also that the EU is working on a plan that may grant Ukraine partial EU membership.
Norway wishes to play a role in the new security structure that the EU envisages, in which Europe stands on its own feet. But if this occurs at the price of poorer relations with the United States, it is a difficult choice for Norway.
The Government inclines towards EU membership, but public opinion remains opposed to it.
