A number of Norwegian artists have reportedly produced World Cup songs ahead of Norway’s participation in the FIFA World Cup. NRK chose a Year 7 class at Linderud School in Oslo to vote on the World Cup songs in a segment on Dagsrevyen on Monday. There were many hijabs, few ethnic Norwegians, and not a single vote for the old classic “Alt for Norge”.
Oslo school chosen to select World Cup song on Dagsrevyen
Norway is set to participate in this year’s FIFA World Cup, and will play its first match against Iraq on 17 June. We do not know how interested the Year 7 pupils at Linderud School are in the Norwegian national team, but they are certainly not interested in old Norwegian football anthems. That is to say Drillos’ “Alt for Norge” from 1994, which received zero votes from the selected pupils in the somewhat peculiar report on NRK Dagsrevyen.
“Alt for Norge” is a classic
“Even after three decades of new football songs, one track still stands as the undisputed favourite: the legendary ‘Alt for Norge’ from the 1994 World Cup. Written by Ivar Dyrhaug and Torstein Flakne, with Drillos themselves providing the chorus, the song became a phenomenon and sold several hundred thousand copies as part of the compilation album ‘Absolute Champions’. Since its relaunch in 2018, ‘Alt for Norge’ has been streamed more than 5.5 million times – clear proof that the song still lives in the hearts of Norwegian football fans,” writes emmo.no, which is reissuing the record on vinyl to coincide with this year’s World Cup.

– Which one shall we sing?
“So this year, several new World Cup songs have apparently been produced. But which one shall we sing? We have had help from the children,” NRK says in the Dagsrevyen segment. It continues:
“Artist Katastrofe says that he has made the World Cup song, namely ‘Vikingblod’. Nicolay Ramm and Markus Neby say they have made the World Cup song ‘Sammen for Norge’.”
All the pupils on NRK’s panel voted for “Vikingblod”; none voted for the old classic. The latter is available, among other places, on YouTube, where it has received 618,000 views since 2018.
We reproduce a few lines of the lyrics, which many people can probably still recite, regardless of what the pupils at Linderud School may think. Or NRK.
Norway is a beautiful land
With mountains and valleys, sea and shore.
But our winters can grow cold.
Green veils and naked trees
Signal that a time is near
That brings excitement for us all.
Our finest men shall go into battle once again.
(Come on, lads!)
Chorus:
We give everything, everything for Norway,
Sacrifice everything if we must.
We are red, white and blue,
Through the whole match we shall keep fighting
For Norway, our fatherland.
