Local authorities across the United Kingdom are quietly installing heavy, movable steel structures in town centres, pedestrian precincts and at public events. Critics call them “diversity barriers”.
The structures are designed to prevent vehicles from being driven into crowds—a threat that has become increasingly common in Europe following a series of terrorist attacks using vehicles as weapons.
“Isolated incidents” carried out by the “mentally disturbed”
“Diversity barriers” are heavy steel blocks or bollards that can be deployed quickly. They are often disguised as “street furniture” or flower planters so as not to appear too intimidating. They are installed around Christmas markets, Pride parades, shopping districts and other places where large crowds gather.
The authorities describe the measures as “vehicle attack security measures”. Critics argue that they are a direct consequence of mass immigration and the increased threat posed by Islamist terrorism.

In recent years, Europe has experienced a number of serious attempted or completed vehicle attacks against civilians. Examples include London, Nice, Berlin and Stockholm. By installing “diversity barriers”, the authorities acknowledge that the threat is “the new normal”, yet most politicians still refuse to link the barriers directly to immigration and Islam. Instead, they continue to speak vaguely of “extremism”, “isolated incidents” and “mental illness”.

For a large number of Britons, the installations symbolise the failure of multiculturalism. Streets that were safe just a few decades ago must now be protected as though they were in a war zone. The importation of non-integrable populations continues even as barriers are erected to protect the public from the consequences. The measures are defended as “necessary to keep society safe in a new era”.
Some “isolated incidents” of vehicle attacks carried out by “mentally unstable” individuals shouting “Allahu Akbar” over the past ten years:
- 14 July 2016 – Nice: Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, a Tunisian Muslim, drove a 19-tonne lorry into the Bastille Day crowd. 86 killed, 458 injured.
- 19 December 2016 – Berlin: Anis Amri, a Tunisian asylum seeker, drove a lorry into a Christmas market. 12–13 killed, more than 56 injured. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.
- 22 March 2017 – Westminster, London: Khalid Masood, a British convert to Islam, drove an SUV into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge before fatally stabbing a police officer. 5 killed, approximately 50 injured.
- 7 April 2017 – Stockholm: Rakhmat Akilov, an Uzbek Muslim, drove a stolen lorry into a pedestrian street and a department store. Five killed, more than 14 injured.
- 3 June 2017 – London Bridge: Khuram Butt, a Muslim of Pakistani origin, together with Rachid Redouane and Youssef Zaghba, drove a van into pedestrians before stabbing members of the public. Eight killed, 48 injured.
- 17–18 August 2017 – Barcelona and Cambrils: Younes Abouyaaqoub and a cell composed predominantly of Muslims of Moroccan origin drove a van into pedestrians on La Rambla and carried out a separate vehicle attack in Cambrils. 16 killed, including the attackers, and more than 150 injured.
- 14 August 2018 – Parliament, London: Salih Khater, a Sudanese Muslim, drove a car into cyclists and security barriers outside Parliament. Several people were injured.
- 18 August 2020 – A100 motorway, Berlin: An Iraqi man drove into motorcyclists while shouting “Allahu Akbar”, claiming to be “a soldier of Allah”. Several injured.
- 13 February 2025 – Munich: Farhad Noori, an Afghan asylum seeker, drove a Mini Cooper into a trade union demonstration. Two killed, more than 40 injured. He shouted “Allahu Akbar” and made prayer gestures when arrested.
- 2 October 2025 – Heaton Park Synagogue, Manchester: Jihad al-Shamie, a Syrian-born British citizen, drove into the synagogue gates and pedestrians before stabbing Jews. Two killed, several injured.
- 5 November 2025 – Île d’Oléron, France: A man who had recently converted to Islam drove into pedestrians and cyclists, shouted “Allahu Akbar” and claimed he was on a mission from Allah. Five injured.
- 16 May 2026 – Modena: Salim El Koudri, an Italian of Moroccan origin, drove into pedestrians before stabbing a bystander. Several seriously injured; one later died of injuries sustained in the attack.
- 25 July 2026 – Berlin: The Arab Abdul Ballout drove into the crowd during Pride celebrations. One woman killed and 29 people injured. Ballout was shot dead by police.
