It is not many years since gang rapes were shocking isolated incidents. Now there are 751 gang rapes in a single year in Germany, approximately two every single day. This is reported by Den Korte Avis and Focus.
In Freiburg, ten men were sentenced to prison terms of up to five and a half years after the rape of an 18-year-old woman in October 2018.
There was a time when these horrific assaults attracted enormous attention from both the media and the public. Nevertheless, their number has increased significantly, including in Germany.
The number of gang rapes in Germany in 2025 was 751. These figures were provided by the German federal government in response to an inquiry from the party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) in the Bundestag. The offences occurred particularly frequently in Berlin, North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony.

Relative to population size, the number of offences is by far the highest in the German capital.
The number of gang rapes has been high for many years. There were 781 in 2023 and 812 in 2024. The suspects are predominantly German citizens (509), although no information is provided as to how many of them have an immigrant background.
They are followed by Syrians (110), Afghans (64), Iraqis (46) and Turks (44).

Of the 772 people who were subjected to gang rape, 619 held German citizenship.
In an interview with Focus Online, Stephan Brandner, a legal policy spokesman for the AfD parliamentary group in the Bundestag, stated that the perpetrators had previously been known to the police. This demonstrates “an obvious failure of the justice system, the security authorities and the politicians”.
And:
“What is needed here is consistent criminal prosecution, faster judicial proceedings, tougher sentences and – in the case of foreign offenders – the consistent revocation of their residence permits.”
Only in this way can women be effectively protected against such acts.
