Hamas has consistently insisted that its struggle concerns only Israel. It has now been revealed that Hamas maintained weapons caches across Europe and was planning to unleash similar attacks on European soil. The attack was scheduled for the second anniversary of 7 October.
It is the respected Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung that reports this. Hamas had built its covert infrastructure before 7 October: concealed weapons depots, smuggling routes, logistical networks and sleeper terrorist cells ready to be activated on orders from the leadership.
According to the report, which is based in part on German security investigation documents, the German authorities believe that Hamas intended to carry out the attacks around the second anniversary of the 7 October massacre. The alleged plot is said to have been foiled through intelligence operations and arrests carried out in several European countries.
The authorities uncovered Hamas-related activity in Germany, Austria, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Greece and Cyprus. Among the discoveries was a weapons cache found in Austria last year containing five loaded pistols, ten magazines, more than 100 rounds of ammunition and several explosive devices.
According to the report, Vienna served as a central logistical hub for the network. A 39-year-old British man was arrested in London in connection with the weapons cache, while investigators claim that 13 pistols, an AK-47 assault rifle and more than 900 rounds of ammunition were transported through Denmark, Germany and Austria. Four Hamas members have since been convicted in Germany.
The investigation concludes that Hamas’ military wing secretly established an operational infrastructure in Europe despite the organisation’s longstanding claims that it operates only in Israel, Gaza, and Judea and Samaria. Investigators say the network included concealed weapons depots, weapons-smuggling routes and an activation system designed to enable rapid attacks as soon as the order was given.
The report comes as Germany’s Federal Public Prosecutor continues to bring charges against Hamas members accused of establishing terrorist infrastructure across Europe. According to the prosecution, the preparations began several years before the 7 October massacre, underscoring what investigators describe as Hamas’ long-term strategy of expanding its terrorist operations beyond the Middle East.
These plans ought to serve as a wake-up call and give cause for reflection for governments that responded to the terrorism by recognising Palestine, as Espen Barth Eide did in the spring of 2024. How would the government have appeared in the eyes of the public after such an attack? There have been many warnings.
