One of the most serious human rights crises is unfolding in Iran right now.
The Islamic Republic has carried out mass killings, arrests, torture, disappearances and show trials on a scale not seen in recent history. Attempts have been made to conceal the carnage by blocking internet and other communications. The crisis is historic and unprecedented. It is a threat to regional and global security, but the regime continues to rule through divinely legitimised terror.
… But the world is responding
The EU has summoned Iran’s ambassador to Brussels to condemn “state violence” against protesters. This followed similar calls from France, Germany, Italy, the UK, Spain, the Netherlands, Finland, Portugal and Belgium on 9-13 January.

The EU has formally classified the Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a “terrorist organisation”. In response to the EU’s terror listing, Iran has announced that it will terror-list the armed forces of EU member states, a strong reaction that shows desperation and increasing isolation.

In the US, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has banned high-ranking Iranian officials and their family members from travelling to the US.

The US has reportedly warned allies that it could strike Iran as early as this weekend.
High-ranking US military officials say Trump could give the green light for strikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities, military targets and IRGC leaders as early as Sunday. The aim is to bring an end to the Iranian regime.
There is no independent confirmation of the warning. US CENTCOM has declined to comment on the matter.

The Iranian regime has raised the red Shia Islamic flag on top of the Jamkaran Mosque. The green flag was lowered and the red one raised. For Shia, red symbolises “revenge”. It was hoisted after the murder of Qassem Soleimani, among others. It is hoisted in mourning for Shia imams or as a declaration of military action.
