Magdalena Andersson sees no possibility of forming a government in Sweden. The Left Party is demanding a place at the government table, while the Centre Party refuses to let them in.
The leader of the Social Democrats made the announcement at a press conference on Monday morning, VG and NTB report.
– At present, there is no possibility for me to form a government, Andersson says, according to Expressen.
The announcement comes despite the red-green parties securing 176 of the Riksdag’s 349 seats in the election. The parties on the other side won 173.
The Left Party has made it clear that it will not support a government in which it does not itself participate. The Centre Party, for its part, has refused to support a government that includes the Left Party.
Andersson has therefore failed to unite the electoral majority behind a government.
On Sunday evening, the Left Party also announced that it would support the Moderate Party’s Andreas Norlén as Speaker of the Riksdag.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has already announced his resignation following the election. Andersson’s announcement leaves the path towards a new Swedish government uncertain.
