In a final draft of a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, Iran agrees not to produce or acquire nuclear weapons, a senior Iranian official tells Reuters.
The statement comes shortly after mediators from Qatar flew to Tehran on Sunday morning, reports The Jerusalem Post.
The final draft of the agreement also stipulates that the United States will lift all oil sanctions on Iran and remove the blockade of Iranian ports, while Iran will reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
However, the details are to be negotiated over a period of two months:
The official says that, in the draft agreement, the United States has agreed that Tehran will dilute its stockpile of highly enriched uranium within Iran. The mechanism for this will be discussed over the next 60 days.
The United States will also work with regional allies to develop a reconstruction and development plan for Iran, which is to be negotiated and agreed with Tehran during those 60 days.
A great deal may therefore happen that could prevent the agreement from being finalised, not least in light of Tehran’s warning that it will not stand idly by and watch Israel’s conflict with the Iranian proxy in Lebanon.
