Threats against the American and Israeli embassies have led police to introduce a new security zone in Östermalm in central Stockholm. The measure applies to parts of Diplomatstaden and will take effect on Tuesday, March 24 at 3:00 PM.
The background is an increased threat assessment linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. According to the police, there is a tangible risk of serious crime in the area, including shootings and explosions.
The security zone includes, among other areas, those surrounding the American and Israeli embassies.
Police have maintained an increased presence in the area for some time, but now assess that additional measures are necessary.
Expanded police powers
The introduction of a security zone means that police are granted expanded powers. Within the zone, individuals may be subject to stop-and-search procedures and vehicles may be searched for weapons or other dangerous objects – even without specific suspicion of a crime.
At the same time, an increased police presence and more preventive checks are expected.
Linked to international conflict
According to the police, the decision is connected to the security developments stemming from the conflict involving, among others, Iran, United States and Israel.
In its press release, the police emphasize that the conflict is not limited to the region, but also affects areas where American, Israeli, and Jewish interests are present.
Based on previous incidents and the current threat assessment, authorities believe the risk of serious crime in the area is elevated.
Valid for two weeks
The security zone is introduced under the Police Act and will remain in effect until April 7. Under the regulations, such a zone may be in place for a maximum of two weeks at a time.
The aim is to strengthen the police’s ability to prevent and deter serious crime, as well as to increase safety in the area.
