The Daily Mail reports that Nasrallah is dead. The newspaper trusts the Israeli reports. It calls the elimination of the Hezbollah leader Israel’s greatest victory so far in the war. “First there were reports citing ‘sources’, now it is the IDF itself that says on the record that Nasrallah has been killed.
It changes the rules of the game. Israel has demonstrated an ability to project lethal force that leaves the experts and correspondents of Norwegian media speechless. They had hoped that Israel would face resistance. As recently as a couple of days ago, Dagsnytt talked about “powerful” Iran.
Iran does not want to be drawn into the war. It is now seeing what Israel is capable of in Beirut. The same could happen with Tehran.
Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed on 31 July when he was a guest in Tehran. That was a powerful signal. Same with the pagers. Israel is signalling that it can read the enemy’s infrastructure like an open book. This creates panic among Hamas, Hezbollah and the Revolutionary Guard. None of them are safe, especially not the leadership.
Hezbollah’s Shiite cleric leader had been in power since February 1992, leading the group in its transition from a militant group formed in the 1982 Lebanon War, set against the backdrop of the Lebanese Civil War, to a political party and regional powerhouse.
Under the leadership of 64-year-old Nasrallah, Hezbollah has fought wars against Israel and participated in the conflict in neighbouring Syria, helping to tip the balance of power in favour of President Bashar Assad.
It comes after Israel said it had also killed the leader of the Hamas network in Syria, as Israel takes the war to its enemies and continues to flog the Middle East.
The air strikes that flattened Beirut overnight have restarted this morning, as locals desperately search for survivors in the ruins of their city.
A triumphant IDF spokesman said: “Hassan Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorise the world.
Defence chief Herzi Halevi says the world has yet to see all the “tools” Israel has at its disposal after two two-tonne bombs levelled six blocks in Beirut. Hezbollah had excavated a bunker beneath the blocks, believing them to be safe.
When the entire leadership was assembled, Netanyahu gave the order to strike. The US was not notified until the planes were in the air.
