The Danes have the opportunity to take a citizen’s initiative to have a case taken up in the Folketing. Some think it is important to promote active euthanasia. Active euthanasia is on the rise in several western countries, particularly the Netherlands and Canada. Now over 50,000 Danes have signed a petition that wants it introduced in Denmark.

A citizens’ proposal to make active euthanasia legal in Denmark has received 50,000 signatures and will be considered in the Folketing.

According to the newspaper Kristeligt Dagblad, it is the first time that the Danish Parliament will vote on a proposal for active euthanasia.

However, it is not the first time that a citizens’ proposal has been raised to make active euthanasia legal in Denmark. In 2018, a similar proposal reached 8,386 signatures, while another received 1,409 signatures in 2019, writes Politiken. (NTB-Ritzau)
